There is still a debate whether the subject of these articles are really in the public domain.
These works or characters (ex: Kermit and characters from Sam Friends (since there is debate of Sam and Friends was legally published despite airing "live" and its lost media which means looking for Kermit's debut short if it lacked a notice would seem hard. Although the show never seemed to have renewed its copyright or if thr Essay Meats commercials were the "legal" debut of the character), Conan The Barbarian (although this was resolved by the PD community as the first story never renewed it's copyright and post-1981 commercial characters (since the law changed that notices were no longer required in the public broadcast of 60 second works and only on the master tapes, but the master tapes for characters like Doug, Noid, Fred The Baker are currently lost and it's unknown if they are public domain or not. The only exceptions are Statelite Mickey which debuted in a poster that wasn't registered and Fruity Yummy Mummy who likely debuted on the cereal box before his commercial debut) have a controversial debate.
So CAUTION if planning on using any of these characters for commercial usages. Their copyright statuses are a mystery for mow..
